Whitewashed Towel Rail

2021 project

This whitewashed towel rail was another easy DIY project.

Whitewashing furniture is a great way to refresh timeless pieces that work well, but are perhaps not quite in your style.

This towel rail, while still practical and functional, needed an upgrade.

The farmhouse style of whitewashing was the best way to do this, without taking up too much time or effort.

The style and shape of this towel rail meant that sanding or stripping the old varnish wasn’t an easy option, and because I had limited time, the best way was to apply the paint directly to the piece.

I started by cleaning and wiping down the entire piece to remove any dust or oils.

Then I diluted a mixture of off-white house paint, and used a brush to apply a watered down layer of paint onto the piece.

The particular wall paint that I used (Dulux – Wash and Wear) applied and adhered with no problem at all, and has lasted the past year and a half with no problems.

Applying the paint doesn’t need to be even or perfect. The more rustic and imperfect it is, the better.
