These Hessian coastal table lamps were another simple DIY project.
The original lamp shades were a deep burgundy colour made of a faux suede material. The base of the lamp shades were a polished dark finish.
They were in excellent condition, but needed a refresh to match the coastal decor of the new room.
I didn’t take a ‘before’ photo of the table lamps, but this edited photo gives an idea of the original look of the lamps.
Materials Used
- Hessian fabric (rectangular piece)
- Adhesive spray
- Hot glue gun + sticks
- Painters tape
- Interior house paint (off-white)
- Mini roller brush + tray
Process
The lamp shade height and circumference was measured and a rectangular piece of hessian fabric was cut, with extra fabric allowance for the top and bottom (height), and for the overlap at the back (circumferential).
The lamp shade was lightly covered in adhesive spray, and the hessian fabric was placed around it. The external overlap (around <5 cm) at the back of the lamp shade was sealed with adhesive spray.
The fabric allowance at the top and bottom was gently folded over and hot glued along the internal rim of the lamp shade.
I recommend using a fabric allowance of <2 cm, to make it easier to handle when gluing and folding over. I used around 1 cm and it was a little tricky to fold over.
The metal fitting of the lamp base, and the electrical wiring cable was sealed off with painters tape to prevent paint marks.
The base stand was painted with off-white interior house paint using a mini roller brush and tray. It took about 2 – 3 coats to cover the existing colour.
Overall, a very simple project, that took very little time and effort. Wrapping existing lamp shades in hessian fabric is an easy way to create a coastal-inspired look, without much expense.
