Restored Cane Chairs

2021 project

These cane chairs were a relatively easy restoration process.

They were given to me for free, and while they weren’t in the best condition when I got them, I knew they would be an easy fix-up.

I started by spraying down any areas of mould or dark stains with a bleach solution.

I knew I would have to sand them down, as the outer coating had worn down in places, and didn’t look that good.

So I sanded them back with a mouse sander (Black & Decker), with varying degrees of sandpaper grit, going from coarse to fine, to get a relatively smooth finish.

The last step was to polish it with pure raw linseed oil. It was a test run for me to see how it would finish the wood, and while it did ‘yellow’ it significantly, I still found the end result to look quite natural.

There are still a couple of repairs to replace the broken rattan/cane seat cords. But for now, I’ve covered those gaps with a folded foam mat, to help distribute any weight.

Overall, they look really good, and I’m super happy with the result.
