Hanging Wasp Traps

december 2022

These hanging wasp traps might be one of the best things I’ve done for the garden.

We have a high number of German wasps in our area (also known as Yellow jackets in North America). Normally, during the summer and early autumn months, these wasps are so prevalent that they become a nuisance.

I found these traps from a local hardware store in New Zealand (Mitre 10), and they have worked so well in reducing, or maybe even eliminating the wasp problem there once was.

New Zealand Hanging Wasp Traps Effective

I hung these traps in early spring, and now, early summer, there are next to no wasps in the garden. That’s a huge difference from their normal numbers.

I used jam, sugar, white vinegar, and fruit juice as the bait, following the instructions on the box.

The vinegar is essential for ensuring the traps attract wasps, and no bees.

Checking the first batch of wasps, there were no bees, only wasps, flies and a cockroach.

These photos might be a little gnarly, but it gives a picture of how effective these traps are.

Hanging Wasp Traps Highly Effective

I highly recommend these wasp traps, for every garden and property in New Zealand.

It could go a long way to reducing, or maybe even eliminating the notorious wasp problem we have here in New Zealand.
